What began its form as eleven teams in 1920, grew to be the top level of professional football in the United States of America. It was originally called the American Professional Football Association until it was changed to the National Football League in 1922. The American Football Conference and the National Football Conference are what the league split into, with each conference containing four divisions which contain four teams each for a total of sixteen teams per conference. The thirty-two teams of the league are formed together as an unincorporated association. Each regular season is seventeen weeks long and holds sixteen games per team; at the end of which, six teams from each conference play in what is called the NFL playoffs. The twelve teams face off in this single-elimination tournament that climaxes with one of the all time most watched sporting events of all time, The Super Bowl!
